How to Start Your Sourdough Journey (Even If You’re a Beginner!)

Welcome to your first bake! With the JIG JAR sourdough kit, baking artisan bread at home becomes a joyful ritual — even if you’re just starting out.
Learning to make sourdough can feel intimidating, but we’ll guide you step-by-step. Let’s break down the essentials of feeding and maintaining your sourdough starter to ensure a bubbly, happy beginning.

What Is a Sourdough Starter?
A sourdough starter is a live culture of flour and water that naturally ferments to create wild yeast. It replaces commercial yeast and gives your bread its distinct tang and beautiful texture.
With your JIG JAR 900ml glass jar, you're starting off clean, organized, and ready for success. The included feeding tracker helps you stay on schedule while the thermometer sticker ensures your starter stays at the right temperature (ideally 21–24°C / 70–75°F).
Feeding Your Starter (The Simple Way)
For daily care:
  1. Discard half of your starter, don’t worry, it’s part of the process!
  2. Add: 60g flour, 60g water (filtered, room temperature)
  3. Mix with the Danish dough whisk from your kit
  4. Seal with the cloth cover and let it rest at room temp
In 2–4 days, you'll see bubbles, a tangy aroma, and plenty of rise.
Monitor, Mix, and Wait
  • Use the level tracker to watch your starter grow each day.
  • If it doubles within 6 hours, it’s ready to bake.
  • Tip: Keep your kit on the counter near a warm spot, but not direct sunlight.
Ready to Bake?
Once your starter is active, mix your dough using the JIG TRIO spatulas and Danish whisk. Let it rise in the proofing baskets, bake on the mat or sling, and enjoy the smell of fresh bread at home.
